Note

Tuesday, September 23: Chuck B. Science Conversations will investigate brain to computer communication (mind reading!)
NEW TIME and PLACE:   2:30 pm in the Terrace Auditorium

He uttered a sentence in his head. Immediately, the computer spoke “I am looking for a cheetah!” The patient cried tears of joy.

The man had advanced A.L.S. (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Most of his muscles, including his larynx, were paralyzed. Not only had the computer spoken the sentence, the words had his own voice. He had been playing hide-and-seek with his daughter, who had dressed up as a cheetah. He could now participate in real time.

This this remarkable achievement was described in a recent article in the New York Times “For Some Patients, the ‘Inner Voice’ May Soon Be Audible” and in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) "An Accurate and Rapidly Calibrating Speech Neuroprosthesis".  These are accessed by clicking the appropriate link in the Related Documents box above right. There is a previous article describing the initial succusses of the project (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/14/health/als-ai-brain-implants.html?nlocked_article_code=1.jE8._sSq.omINdh5hpa74&smid=url-share).

Lastly, here is a link to a YouTube video showing this patient using this system:
