An American scholar in Greece (Jules Dassin, who also wrote and directed the film) sets about improving the life of a prostitute (Melina Mercouri) with whom he is infatuated. To him, she becomes a symbol of Greece's fall from its ancient glory and he decides he must save her. This romantic comedy was nominated for five Oscars and won for Best Original Song. CAPTIONS
