Derived from lawn bowling, this activity joins a team of three residents in friendly competition with another team of three. Team members take turns rolling “bowls” down a carpeted alley towards a white target ball called “the jack.” The shape and composition of the bowls causes them to curve. Bowlers use that property in choosing strategies that put their team’s bowls closer to the jack than the other team’s. Unintended consequences often occur, adding to the fun. A session consists of ten frames. Eighteen bowls are rolled during each frame.
The required physical effort for carpet bowling is small, and precision is rewarded more than strength. Bowlers should be able to maintain their balance while releasing their bowls and be able to walk from one end of the alley to the other. Women and men can be equally successful.
Each weekly bowling session has six “regular” bowlers, and the two teams of three are chosen randomly at the start of each session. A list of “substitute” bowlers is maintained. Regulars endeavor to find a substitute to cover any absences so that each session has a full complement of six bowlers.
Experienced bowlers are always available to teach newcomers the basics. Call or email the contact person to learn more.
