Playing the Recorder at Willamette View

If you would like to join a congenial group of residents learning together, WV recorders has a beginning class taught by a professional instructor. We can lend you a recorder and beginning instruction book, or you may purchase your own. The class meets for one hour a week and there is a modest fee after the initial lessons.

"Learning to play a new instrument is one of the activities which qualifies as excellent for brain health as we age."

Residents who have been playing longer have formed a Consort, with coaching by a professional teacher. This also meets once a week, for one hour. There is the same modest monthly cost. These groups meet year-round, but it is possible to take breaks and return to your group.

"Playing that new instrument with others adds to brain health because it takes a higher level of skill and also is a very social activity."

Another group is “Recorders For Fun”. This informal group is composed of anyone who wants to spend one hour on Saturday sight-reading the provided music. There is no cost.

WV Recorders currently give two concerts a year and often play at various informal events. A smaller group, different each month, plays at the Health Center.

These players make all arrangements for activities themselves.  This group has a steering committee with a named treasurer and has received funding through the Resident Council, so Resident Council financial procedures are observed. WV Recorders may be contacted through the Resident Council Performing Arts Councilor.

"I have found that playing recorder with others has helped me learn to be less affected by my mistakes in music and in everyday life."
