Toilet Use During an Emergency

Toilets might not work during an emergency, so know the recommended procedure for toileting in place.

Be prepared by having your Potty Pack on hand at all times. It should include:

• Plastic non-compostable kitchen garbage bags

• Duct tape

• Twist ties (or some other means to close plastic bag)

• Toilet paper

• Something to assist with odor. The most common items are baking soda and kitty litter. You may find other options online.

During an emergency the recommended procedure for toileting in place is:

• Flush out any water that remains in the toilet bowl.

• Line your toilet bowl (under the seat) with a plastic kitchen garbage bag. Secure with duct tape to outside of bowl.

• Put a second “transfer” plastic kitchen garbage bag inside. This bag will be tied up and removed while the other will remain in the toilet.

• Add some baking soda, kitty litter, peat moss, or something similar to absorb liquid and reduce odors in the second bag.

• Once the bag is in place, and absorbent/odor control is in the bag, lower the seat and lid to hold the bag in place and reduce odor.

After using the bag:

• Close the toilet lid.

• If reasonable, seal the bag between uses with a twist tie to reduce odor.

• Clean your hands with wet wipes or hand sanitizer after use or after changing bags. Throw the used wipes into the “transfer” bag.

 • The bag can be used several times before disposing.

• When the bag needs to be replaced, tie the inner bag securely and replace it with a clean garbage bag and absorbent/odor reducer for next use.

• Your Safety Liaison or WV staff will tell you where to deposit used bags.
