"Empire of the Sun" remains an underrated gem of Steven Spielberg's distinguished filmography. It stars Christian Bale, at age 13, who portrays a young British boy's internment in a Japanese prison camp near Shanghai during World War II. John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson and Nigel Havers fill out the roster in this large and superbly orchestrated movie. National Board of Review Best Film and Best Director of 1987.
