When a wealthy factory owner is murdered in a racially hostile southern town in Mississippi, an African American detective from Philadelphia (Sidney Poitier) is asked to investigate in this classic award-winning film. He does this while eventually winning the respect, protection, and ultimately the friendship of the local Police Chief (Rod Steiger, who won the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Actor).
