This lovely English film is based on a WWII diary commissioned to record the lives of ordinary people. Nella Last defies her overprotective husband (David Threfall) and blossoms in the local Women’s Voluntary Service. Victory Wood, author and star, captures a life full of emotional complexity in the socially stratified England in the early part of the 20th century. Stephanie Cole plays Mrs. Waite.
