Rod Steiger (winner of the BAFTA Best Foreign Actor award) portrays a lonely New York Jewish pawnbroker, who was a victim of Nazi persecution when he lived in Poland. Having lost faith in mankind, he becomes bitter and antisocial. But he ultimately comes to realize the tragedy of his own behavior - and that people are not all bad!
