In a time when women were banned from acting on stage, Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) is the most celebrated leading Desdemona of his time. His dresser, Maria (Clare Danes) performs an illegal Desdemona on a lesser stage which prompts King Charles II to change theater forever. Rupert Everett, as King Charles II, is hilarious.
