This is the autobiography of Solomon Northrup, a free black man from New York state who is sold in to slavery in the mid 1800's . There exists an earlier 1984 film also adapted from his autobiography 'Solomon Northrup Odyssey'. The film won best picture at the 2014 Oscars. Chiwetel Ejiofor was nominated for best actor. Also stars Brad Pitt as an abolitionist.
